VALPARAISO & VIÑA DEL MAR PRACTICAL INFORMATION

About Valparaiso and Viña del Mar

Just an hour and a half northwest of Santiago, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar are part of the same urban area and they are like two sides of a coin. Viña del Mar, the "Garden City", is one of Chile's premier beach resorts, with excellent hotels and shopping. Valparaíso, immortalized in the words of Pablo Neruda, is one of South America's most charismatic and historic ports, with its charming ascensores (funicular railways) and colorful hillside constructions.
Valparaíso is the capital city of the region and the seat of the regional government. It has 1.5 million inhabitants and its surface is 16,400 km2. In Valparaíso and Viña del Mar there are 12 universities, so both are recognized as "university cities". They are an important educational center, renowned for its quality in Chile and whole Latin America. In 2003, UNESCO declare the historical city center of Valparaíso World Heritage Site.
